History of Gunter

Gunter was founded in 1901 when the family of  rancher “Jot” Gunter deeded 328 acres for the original town site. The first residence was established in 1903 by Albert Earthman, who would later charter the First National Bank in Gunter.

Gunter grew until 1924, when the First State Bank closed its doors, leaving many businessmen and farmers in financial ruin. The Great Depression and two devastating fires in 1930 and 1948 further damaged the local economy.

Gunter began to grow again in the 1950s, and experienced its greatest growth in the 2000s and 2010s, after doubling in population during the 1990s. Gunter has started to experience overflow growth from the northern Metroplex suburbs, due to its location on Hwy 289 and future tollway route.  Its location is approximately 10 miles north of  Celina as well as its proximity to the Sherman metropolitan area and nearby Lake Texoma and Lake Ray Roberts.

Finally, in May 2002, a branch of  Ada, OK, based Landmark opened in Gunter, thus providing the town its first financial institution in nearly 90 years.

Recent developments include the opening of a Sonic, Dollar General, shopping centers, Preston Trails Farm, and select baseball center, College Hill Baseball.

In 2015 Gunter gave a head nod to the history of Gunter while also looking forward to its future growth by creating a new town logo.
